June 19th, 2017 | Posted by Allie in Education Services

We know it to be true. Summer never quite lasts as long as we dream it will while staring at the wide-open spaces on our calendar. Before you’ve had the chance to use up your bottle of sunscreen or finish that vacation photobook you’ve been meaning to order, it’s time again to hit the hallways.

With school-based Speech Language Pathologist (SLP) contracts typically starting in August, there are a few simple things that you can do to make your time off constructive and fun while ensuring next year is the best yet.

Why not make the most of your summer before it slips away like another breathtaking sunset?

Get Your Top Pick

Thinking about making a switch? You’ll want to start your research early so you know what’s out there. If you’re considering moving to a new city, use the time off as an opportunity to visit your maybe new hometown to see what it’s like up close and personal. Likewise, being an early bird means you can be among the first to apply for the open school therapy positions that match up with your skillset and preferences.

Freshen Up

Summer, and especially being outdoors, can be an opportune time to reflect on your dreams and goals for the future. Many school-based SLPs are encouraged to write a professional goal each year. If you’re working on your goal for next year, it can be helpful to frame it so that it’s specific, measurable and attainable. Perhaps you are looking to strengthen your knowledge and comfort level in a particular area of therapy. A step to achieving that goal might be enrolling in a professional development or continuing education course. There are a host of courses available online so take advantage of the extra hours in your day this summer and get up to speed.
