Occupational therapists have the remarkable duty to enable people of all ages to live life to its fullest. That responsibility can take many shapes including the smaller variety – kids!
School-based OTs help children with disabilities to participate fully in school and social situations. They set the stage in the formative years for what is hopefully a healthy and happy adulthood. According to AOTA, The American Occupational Therapy Association, OTs support the needs of all students, including those without disabilities, by serving as active participants in developing curriculums; addressing school health and safety; identifying assessment accommodations; and developing violence prevention, anti-bullying, and other types of programs.
Going back to school is certainly one of the most fulfilling paths for OTs with a myriad of benefits that might get overlooked.
Job availability might be the leading benefit for school-based OTs, and with options comes flexibility. If you’re looking to venture to a new school or across the country, occupational therapy can open the right door to get you there. Changing the setting means being faced with new challenges and opportunities to grow both professionally and personally. You’ll never stop learning – right along with your students.
You will not have to worry about getting bored with the “same thing, different day” rut as a school-based OT. You’ll find a melting pot of personalities, backgrounds and needs to keep things fresh and exciting. Only wish to work with certain grade levels? You can pick the contract that fits your needs. Meeting new people with an always changing caseload is part of the fun and a meaningful benefit to school-based OTs.
Regardless of how much you might love going to work (and you will as a school-based OT), having time off is usually an important part of the equation. A commonly forgotten benefit for school-based OT’s schedules is the amount of vacation – often close to three months! Think what you could do with three months off every year. Explore a distant continent, learn a new language, or have enough time to do what you want with no strings attached.
As a school-based OT, you have the honor of educating and empowering our youth with some pretty awesome perks that come along for the ride. Think you have what it takes?
