The School Therapy Contract Candidate Checklist

Are you a speech language pathologist (SLP), occupational therapist (OT) or physical therapist (PT) thinking about transitioning into a school setting? It’s best to prepare ahead, before applying for the very first time!

Pick a Patient Type

As a school-based therapist, it’s important to start by narrowing your contract search down to the age group and disability type that appeals to you professionally. From pre-K to 12th grade, there are plenty of opportunities available nationwide, but it’s up to you to choose the age range that most interests you.

Decide on a District Location

Next, it’s time to decide on a school district. Do you want to travel? Or work in a school close to home? Lucky for you, school-based contract jobs offer a surplus of flexibility, so if you decide you want to travel now and work closer to home a year from now…as a contractor, you can!

Revise Your Resume

If you have no previous school-based experience, it’s okay. However, it’s a good idea to take the time to revise your resume, before you apply. Be sure to highlight your interest in working with children in your cover letter and/or objective statement. Also, add relative skills and experience such as volunteer work, camp counseling, tutoring and any other clinical pediatric experiences you may have!
