At PPR we like to give shout outs to our Speech Language Pathologists (SLP) all year long but with May being Better Hearing and Speech Month, we want to salute you for all you do. After all, without you, any improvement in hearing and speech would be hard to come by.

There aren’t words to describe your unwavering commitment to your patients while working cohesively with physicians, psychologists, parents and teachers. Your impact each year cascades for decades in the lives of so many.

Many SLPs feel called to this special work and are happily surprised by some of the perks that come with the job.

Stability in a high-growth field

It’s lovely to be needed especially when that translates to a nice paycheck, competitive benefits and a flexible work environment. SLPs who work in schools know the benefits of a consistent work environment and students who make coming to work each day incredibly gratifying.

Variety of specialties and practice settings

According to the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (AHSA), about 56 percent of all SLPs are employed in educational settings, including K-12 schools, preschools, early intervention programs, and colleges and universities. Another 39 percent of SLPs work in health care settings, which can include hospitals and residential health care facilities.

Nothing is as rewarding as seeing someone use their own voice

As an SLP, you know firsthand the challenges associated with stuttering, articulation and dysphagia. You empathize in a unique way with children who experience trouble connecting and socializing with others. While the job isn’t always rose-colored, you make a tremendous contribution to your patients’ lives and those breakthrough moments can carry you through the hardest days.
